Diwali Gifts
Diwali or Deepavali is a celebration of Narakasura's death. Narakasura is son of Bhudevi (earth) and Varaha(Vishnu in boar avatar).
Bhudevi asks Vishnu to bless her son to have long life and be a powerful over all beings and Vishnu grants it.
Narakasura establishes his kingdom of Pragjyotisha in Assam after overthrowing the last of the Danava king Ghatakasura.
Knowing that he is blessed with powers he turns evil and brings all the kingdoms on earth under his control. He then wants to control the heaven or swargalokam and imprisons 16100 women and forces Indra out of his kingdom.
All the devas led by Indra go to Vishnu for ending Narakasura powers and Vishnu promises them he would help them when he incarnates as Lord Krishna. When Vishnu is born as Krishna after several years his wife Satyabhama asks his help to end Narakasura deeds with women.
Krishna with Satyabhama fight a furious battle with Narakasura. After fighting a furious battle Lord Krishna gets hurt and faints as a devine plan to empower Sathyabhama. Sathyabhama get furious and kills Narakasura. Before his death Narakasura asks Sathyabhama to celebrate his death anniversary in Color and lights which is Diwali or Deepavali.
Such a traditional festival celebrated over thousands of years every year. It is worth for people living outside India to send traditional sweets and gifts to their families back home.

Gift giving and Gift Ideas
The gift you are giving would be meaningful if it is really appropriate to Personality of the person receiving it.
For now lets assume that you are giving a birthday gift to the loved one.
Since the person is very close to you it would be easier if you could ask yourself a few questions about him/her
1. Is that person sensitive and emotional?
2. Is that person artistic?
3. Is he/she adventurous?
4. Does James Bond amuse him? (Gadgets guy)
5. Would he/she like parties?
6. Would he/she like to go on a travel adventure with you?
I am sure you already have something in your mind for that person… But wait
Also consider
1. Is he/she expecting, referred or hinted about anything he/she would like to have?
2. Did you ever before thought of doing something special?
3. Are you thinking of a gift which would stay with him/her for ever?
So remember 90% of the joy comes from the Gift taker but the 10% which is also important would come from you if you are satisfied and happy with the gift.
I know that it is really hard to make a gift very special these days. Everything is on the internet and the person receiving it can find it and price it. Very very true.
But some gifts like Travel package, Cruise trip, Art work, jewelry would be hard to find and value. If you really care about making your gift very special than you should go with these items which might not be easily valued. It could be as simple as tickets for upcoming comedy show or a basket ball game.
Some time value doesn't matter. All that matters is how much the other person want a specific item inspire of its availability and price.
I personally would like to have sports watch for years, but it never happened since I already wear a heavy citizen watch. I would be really happy if someone would present or gifted one to me.
Clothes are sometimes an option if you want to see him/her wearing clothes you buy on that special day. But unless you are really close be careful with your choice.
Age is another big factor you need to consider when you are buying a gift.
